How this site is made

A static site, a small calculator and an open dataset. Here is what holds it together.

Site

  • Astro 7.3.4 renders every page to plain HTML at build time.
  • Solid 1.9.17 runs the calculator, the one interactive island. The other pages ship almost no JavaScript.
  • TypeScript 6.0.3 throughout. The data types are generated from the dataset's JSON Schemas, and astro check is the type check.
  • The pricing engine is one dependency-free module with a small formula language, so the same code runs in the browser and in the tests.
  • Hand-written CSS with design tokens, light and dark themes, and no CSS framework.

Type

  • Headings are set in Source Serif 4 (SIL Open Font License), self-hosted through Fontsource.
  • Everything else uses your device's own system fonts.

Hosting

  • Cloudflare Workers serves the built site and the data files.
  • A small Worker answers /api/* only: the optional "describe your workload" box, with Workers KV for spend totals, Cloudflare rate limiting, and a Cron Trigger for spend alerts.
  • That box asks TypeSafe's Jev model to classify your text. Code does the arithmetic. No text or IP addresses are stored.
  • Visit counts come from Umami, cookieless. A strict Content-Security-Policy blocks inline styles and any other third-party request.

Tests

  • Golden vectors check every costing against every example workload and sampling scenario.
  • Playwright 1.64.0 drives the built site in Chromium, and axe-core checks accessibility.
  • Scripts check the schemas, the Content-Security-Policy on every built page, and every link.
  • just runs the recipes; just check runs the whole gate.

Data

  • Every price comes from the vendor's own pricing page and links to it. See the methodology.
  • The dataset is open under CC BY 4.0; the code is Apache-2.0.
